So, I have some gray fabric that needs to be black.  It's 70% cotton, 30% rayon.  My usual M.O. is to dye on the stovetop in a mix of Rit, Dylon, and salt in a slightly stronger concentration than the package calls for because I've found that gives me a really velvety dark black.  Well, I just visited JoAnn's and HOLY CRAP, Dylon is twice as much as Rit!  With almost 4 pounds of fabric, I decided to poll any potential experts on my friends list before blowing the budget on dye.  I'd like to stick with products I can get locally because I need to get it done this week.  I've had several recommendations for Dharma Trading, but after shipping time I'd only have a couple days to get it all done and that makes me a little too nervous.  Suggestions?

Cross your fingers and pray? I've never had any luck getting true blacks with Rit alone, so I think you'd either need to get some Dylon or order the good stuff. Good luck!

I broke down and got some Dylon today. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.

Rit never works for me. I have seen dylon in the craft dept of Walmart before reasonable, relatively speaking.

Sorry I couldn't offer any tips... I've never dyed anything before and I have to admit out of all costuming-related things, it will probably be one of the very last things I try. Knowing my luck, I'd dump things over clumsily and make a mess of my home, much less fabric.

Good luck!
