I picked up my prescription today. That was annoying! I should eat something very bad for me to celebrate...

Trying on

I tried on my 1880's stocking I've been slowly knitting away on. I thought I was getting close to where it was time to start the toe. It turned out I was over an inch past where it was time to start the toe. I want to make sure there's room to shrink, but not that much room! The heel came a lot farther forward than I was expecting it to.

I ripped back to where I wanted the toe to start, counted how many rows that was so the second stocking ends up the same size, and knit the first toe row. By the end of the weekend, I expect I'll have finished the first stocking and cast on the second stocking.

Success!

I can finally get my prescription tomorrow. Thankfully at a nearby pharmacy, not mailed from New Zealand, which was one of the options.

Update on legal cases: one new victory! :) One new restriction :(

Back in August of 2025, we announced a temporary block on account creation for users under the age of 18 from the state of Tennessee, due to the court in Netchoice's challenge to the law (which we're a part of!) refusing to prevent the law from being enforced while the lawsuit plays out. Today, I am sad to announce that we've had to add South Carolina to that list. When creating an account, you will now be asked if you're a resident of Tennessee or South Carolina. If you are, and your birthdate shows you're under 18, you won't be able to create an account.

We're very sorry to have to do this, and especially on such short notice. The reason for it: on Friday, South Carolina governor Henry McMaster signed the South Carolina Age-Appropriate Design Code Act into law, with an effective date of immediately. The law is so incredibly poorly written it took us several days to even figure out what the hell South Carolina wants us to do and whether or not we're covered by it. We're still not entirely 100% sure about the former, but in regards to the latter, we're pretty sure the fact we use Google Analytics on some site pages (for OS/platform/browser capability analysis) means we will be covered by the law. Thankfully, the law does not mandate a specific form of age verification, unlike many of the other state laws we're fighting, so we're likewise pretty sure that just stopping people under 18 from creating an account will be enough to comply without performing intrusive and privacy-invasive third-party age verification. We think. Maybe. (It's a really, really badly written law. I don't know whether they intended to write it in a way that means officers of the company can potentially be sentenced to jail time for violating it, but that's certainly one possible way to read it.)

Netchoice filed their lawsuit against SC over the law as I was working on making this change and writing this news post -- so recently it's not even showing up in RECAP yet for me to link y'all to! -- but here's the complaint as filed in the lawsuit, Netchoice v Wilson. Please note that I didn't even have to write the declaration yet (although I will be): we are cited in the complaint itself with a link to our August news post as evidence of why these laws burden small websites and create legal uncertainty that causes a chilling effect on speech. \o/

In fact, that's the victory: in December, the judge ruled in favor of Netchoice in Netchoice v Murrill, the lawsuit over Louisiana's age-verification law Act 456, finding (once again) that requiring age verification to access social media is unconstitutional. Judge deGravelles' ruling was not simply a preliminary injunction: this was a final, dispositive ruling stating clearly and unambiguously "Louisiana Revised Statutes §§51:1751–1754 violate the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, as incorporated by the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution", as well as awarding Netchoice their costs and attorney's fees for bringing the lawsuit. We didn't provide a declaration in that one, because Act 456, may it rot in hell, had a total registered user threshold we don't meet. That didn't stop Netchoice's lawyers from pointing out that we were forced to block service to Mississippi and restrict registration in Tennessee (pointing, again, to that news post), and Judge deGravelles found our example so compelling that we are cited twice in his ruling, thus marking the first time we've helped to get one of these laws enjoined or overturned just by existing. I think that's a new career high point for me.

I need to find an afternoon to sit down and write an update for [site community profile] dw_advocacy highlighting everything that's going on (and what stage the lawsuits are in), because folks who know there's Some Shenanigans afoot in their state keep asking us whether we're going to have to put any restrictions on their states. I'll repeat my promise to you all: we will fight every state attempt to impose mandatory age verification and deanonymization on our users as hard as we possibly can, and we will keep actions like this to the clear cases where there's no doubt that we have to take action in order to prevent liability.

In cases like SC, where the law takes immediate effect, or like TN and MS, where the district court declines to issue a temporary injunction or the district court issues a temporary injunction and the appellate court overturns it, we may need to take some steps to limit our potential liability: when that happens, we'll tell you what we're doing as fast as we possibly can. (Sometimes it takes a little while for us to figure out the exact implications of a newly passed law or run the risk assessment on a law that the courts declined to enjoin. Netchoice's lawyers are excellent, but they're Netchoice's lawyers, not ours: we have to figure out our obligations ourselves. I am so very thankful that even though we are poor in money, we are very rich in friends, and we have a wide range of people we can go to for help.)

In cases where Netchoice filed the lawsuit before the law's effective date, there's a pending motion for a preliminary injunction, the court hasn't ruled on the motion yet, and we're specifically named in the motion for preliminary injunction as a Netchoice member the law would apply to, we generally evaluate that the risk is low enough we can wait and see what the judge decides. (Right now, for instance, that's Netchoice v Jones, formerly Netchoice v Miyares, mentioned in our December news post: the judge has not yet ruled on the motion for preliminary injunction.) If the judge grants the injunction, we won't need to do anything, because the state will be prevented from enforcing the law. If the judge doesn't grant the injunction, we'll figure out what we need to do then, and we'll let you know as soon as we know.

I know it's frustrating for people to not know what's going to happen! Believe me, it's just as frustrating for us: you would not believe how much of my time is taken up by tracking all of this. I keep trying to find time to update [site community profile] dw_advocacy so people know the status of all the various lawsuits (and what actions we've taken in response), but every time I think I might have a second, something else happens like this SC law and I have to scramble to figure out what we need to do. We will continue to update [site community profile] dw_news whenever we do have to take an action that restricts any of our users, though, as soon as something happens that may make us have to take an action, and we will give you as much warning as we possibly can. It is absolutely ridiculous that we still have to have this fight, but we're going to keep fighting it for as long as we have to and as hard as we need to.

I look forward to the day we can lift the restrictions on Mississippi, Tennessee, and now South Carolina, and I apologize again to our users (and to the people who temporarily aren't able to become our users) from those states.

Oops

Remember the desk I was painting during break until covid stopped everything? I was going to put the wax top layer on it today. It went fine on the back. Then it peeled off the side, once again, like Tinkerbell nail polish. I guess the sanding I thought did nothing worked? Oops.

I peeled off everything but the front drawer, which had also been sanded, and tried waxing that. It worked.

I'm not sure about repainting. It's fine with just the drawer green. The back doesn't show, obviously. I painted that as a test.

IKEA should sell paintable options. You're already building it, so why not paint?

And the cats woke me up in the middle of the night. A kitchen drawer was open, the tray from my espresso machine was pulled out, a lamp was on the floor, a small scratcher was feet from where it should be, and they crashed into the food and water bowls in my room. I think it was all of them because they were all lurking when I woke up.

Wheee!!!

Insurance denied the medication I've been on for five or six years, a student knocked me over with her backpack and I hit my arm om my door, my poor teacher friend is sick, so I took our shared class instead of having prep, and the visit to the new vet was interesting. Three minutes on Tom, 20 minutes of stories. I think another vet is in order.

And I forgot my lunch. At least I had crackers, but no hummus, veggies, and grapes.

I stopped at our insurance place after work, and got an 800 number. Then transferred to the prescription optimization plan. I had to hang up though, to go to the vet.

A little while ago I got a letter that said I may be eligible for the optimization plan. I ignored it, because may doesn't mean you have to. Hopefully I can call tomorrow and get my medicine approved.

I'm so thankful it's a random three day weekend for a contingency day!

Progress

Everyone else went to the movies last night (a makeup from the icy Sunday when the theater was closed) so I worked on my 1878 bathing suit. I hemmed the trousers and cut, joined, and pressed the bias strips for trim. I put the dress on the stand and pinned the back pleats preparatory to tacking them at the waist.

Long day

I woke up at 4 and work thoughts invaded and I never really fell back asleep. After a while I decided to do Wordle and found I somehow skipped yesterday. Oops.

Then work felt so long. Kids are fine, but budget stuff clouds everything.

Routine doctor visit was routine. The NP was nice and I have routine tests to schedule. Fun.

Now I'm going to do the crossword puzzle, pretty much my favorite thing right now!

Minor operations; testing new serving path

Hi all!

I'm doing some minor operational work tonight. It should be transparent, but there's always a chance that something goes wrong. The main thing I'm touching is testing a replacement for Apache2 (our web server software) in one area of the site.

Thank you!

Long day. Worked. Came home. Cleaned poor Tom who had the long haired cat curse, poopy butt. Changed the litter box which finally came after weather delays. Repeat tomorrow, hopefully without cat trauma, but with a routine checkup at my new doctor's office. Yay? It's a good thing, but bleh. I just want to go home after work.

Between the 23rd and yesterday, I also finished seven books. They were all mysteries and therefore not terribly long, but that was a lot of reading!

Busy day!

I unexpectedly changed my newest earrings today. Before 7 in the morning. I'm now wearing my most comfortable hoops.

I woke up at my work time. Stupid internal alarm clock. It's amazing, but it should know weekends.

I was playing on my phone because I rarely go straight back to sleep when that happens, reached to touch something on my phone, my ring caught the earring in my third piercing, and ripped it out.

It was loud. Like a long scrape. It felt sore. I kept counting earrings by touching, one, two, no. Pointy butterfly black, pointy butterfly back, ew, why is it sticky? Earring gone.

So I got up and felt the earring front drop into bed. No sign of the back. I looked in the mirror, couldn't see anything, remembered I'm blind, went to my nightstand and got my glasses. Everything looked normal, except no earring and slightly pink. I sprayed it with saline, the back fell out. There was a little blood and it was a little sore, but it wasn't whatever I expected it to be.

My earring slid in easily. Whew.

I had already decided to wear my super comfortable diamond hoops when I changed earrings. They're hinged with a straight post and so comfortable.

I'm actually past the 6-8 weeks healing time--I had them pierced 9 weeks ago now--but had to decided to wait a little longer. My right ear, the one ripped out this morning, was right next to cartilage so I wanted to give it a little longer to heal. It still gets a little sore. Nothing bad, just like when you put too much pressure on an earring. It's the side I sleep on, so it gets more pressure than the left, especially with the larger than regular earrings piercing earring.

I thought about going back to bed and changing the left earring later, but knew I'd hate myself. It was really hard to take the earring out, like those horror ads about earrings getting stuck that I keep getting, but on try four, it came out, and my comfy hoop slid right in.

I had been wondering if I should change to a more comfortable earring because the piercing earrings are so big and could be why it was still a little sore. Decision made!

My right ear is slightly sore which isn't a surprise. I'm going to be gentle with it and treat it like it was just pierced. I changed to my other super comfortable hoops in my second holes too. And I'll sleep on my left side for a while.

After that, my mom, neighbor friend, and I went to a vigil for Alex Pretti. One of our congresspeople spoke.

And then, a little time travel experience, my mom needed to new walking shoes and wanted to try them on in person and I wanted Converse high tops with cats that I got a targeted ad for, but only came in kids sizes, so I wasn't sure what size to get, so we went to the mall. It was actually busy and there were so many places that who knew were still around. And I have new shoes with cats!

Covered Buttons

I haven't really worked on my bathing suit this week, but I did cover buttons for it. Last night I put it on and verified that it does fit so far and figured out where to hem the pants and where to start marking the hem for the skirt. Unfortunately, it's cold up in the game room so I didn't want to hang out up there pressing hems. I also had decided that I need to tack the pleats in place at the waist so they will sit reasonably nicely under the belt without having to try to adjust them all the time. I figured that needed to be done before hemming, but I didn't want to go up and mess with the dummy in the cold game room. I pinned and tacked the front on myself, but I couldn't do the back the same way.

The long and short of it is that there have been baby steps on it, but mostly I've been reading and cross-stitching.
