My friend Luci moved to San Diego last year, so I visited her today. So nice to see her!

I had morning coffee on the beach this morning. Something I always wanted to do when I was here, but didn't. Soooo relaxing...

I didn't wear this bathing suit in the water like I planned, but that's fine. I like how this vacation ended up!

PENGUINS

The Birch Aquarium started the behind the scenes penguin tours today--they had been paused for renovations. Since I'm only an hour away, of course I went!

In front, we learned some of them love shiny things, like keys. Of course I shook mine at them after the tour.

There were five penguins hanging out in the air conditioned back room. It's the room where they get taken care of. Four were molting, and Percy just likes it there. They can go to their pool whenever they want. They didn't want to. Percy thought about, then decided against it.

I don't want to complain about traffic because PENGUINS, but on the way back, I missed an exit, took the wrong exit on a roundabout, GPS couldn't tell, and I somehow ended up driving around the San Juan Capistrano school district offices. It was really bizarre...

But it was totally worth it. Even if my vacation goal was do nothing! So worth breaking the goal for!

Various minor crises over lunch yesterday that had to be dealt with. We have a fly problem that is growing, so I scrubbed down all the food prep/eating areas while I was home to try and deal with it. Meanwhile, M went over to the main office to talk to them about the rent situation. They said they were trying to figure out the problems with the new website, they discussed all the miscommunications that have happened (like everyone being told the office was closed until the 6th, even though they opened it back up at the beginning of the month, giving everyone the wrong website address when they sent out notices, etc.) and they gave us all the info to pay by money order for this month.

So, on the way home I had to stop and get a money order, which sounds easy and fast but absolutely was not. I tried first at Walmart since it's close to the house, but they kept declining the debit card when I tried to pay. I called PNC's customer service in a mild panic since I was on a time crunch, and the guy said he didn't even see the attempted transactions, we had plenty of money in our account, and it was well below our daily spending cap, so he was flummoxed.

Called M, who gave some suggestions, which were things I'd already tried, then he directed me to a Western Union inside a Walgreens up the street. Friends, there was no Western Union, and the cashier had no idea what I was talking about.

So, M found me an Ace Cash Express, which finally, finally worked, though they charged some stupidly high fees and had to split the amount into two separate payments. -_- I made it back to the apartment office 20 minutes before closing. Their payment system is still not up and running, so she couldn't give me a receipt, but she signed and dated the money order stubs and we kept all the receipts in case there is any fuckery with our account balance next month.

I was sweaty and exhausted after all of that, so we ordered some pizzas since I had stackable coupons, and ended up with two extra larges for $15 total, which pleased me greatly.

Poked around in some online fashion magazines from the 1830s and found a pattern for a canezou in The Ladies' Penny Gazette from 1832. I also found an embroidery pattern that I liked which seemed like it would translate well to chain stitch, so now I just need to actually make the dress and whatnot. Need to figure out my cap situation, too. I want something frothy and absurd!

Home early yesterday to take care of the baby while M had his job interview. It lasted a surprisingly short time, and he said afterward that since he was a referral, the first interview was basically a formality and just some basic HR questions. Round two will be upcoming.

I had my virtual doctor's appointment after that, which was disappointing. I was hoping they could just prescribe me my usual diverticulitis meds and be done with it, but they want to get some images of my colon since with pregnancy it may or may not actually be diverticulitis. (I am 100% positive it is, I've been dealing with this stupid disease for nearly two decades now, I know what a flare feels like.) So, I have an ultrasound appointment on Thursday afternoon. Meh.

After that it was a normal afternoon. The baby was in pretty good spirits, but she had slept late again and had skipped her nap, so by the end of the evening she was a bit cranky. She went down at her normal time, and then M went out and picked us up some hamburgers for dinner, since I was too tired to cook.

M read an article that said that orange juice has become so costly to produce and demand has fallen so much that in 5 years or so it may be considered a specialty item and no longer and staple. Not sure if that's true, but it did make me add an orange tree to the list of garden plants to have once we have a house.

Anyway, hit snooze too many times this morning and so only got a couple of things done before work. Cleaned the cat boxes and made the baby's breakfast, and then was out the door. Will attempt to make soup for dinner tonight, thought I'm not keen on having the stove on for as long as it will take to simmer the soup. May switch gears and make something else instead. ~shrug~

M wanted to watch Big Trouble in Little China on Friday night, which we had  to do after the baby was in bed, so we stayed up far too late and I fell asleep on the couch about 20 minutes from the end.

I stumbled into bed afterward, and miraculously, was allowed to sleep in by the baby, who slept herself until 10AM! M and I were both up at that point, and we didn't want her to sleep too long, so we got her up and M got ready to head out and do tax stuff for his small business ID. He was gone most of the day, and the baby and I had a pretty quiet day at home not doing much of anything. M came home in a sour mood, foiled in his attempts to do anything productive by various forms of bank nonsense.

We had another long talk on Saturday night about his mental state, that did turn out to be productive. He feels a lot of pressure (mostly self-induced) and feels like he's failing, and I assured him that he's not and that everything he does is appreciated.

Sunday I was up before everyone, so I cleaned the dishes in the sink and made us all breakfast sandwiches. The baby was up super late again, so I had the morning to myself, which was lovely. She was up before M, and M woke just as I was finishing all the breakfast things, so we had a nice relaxed morning at the house.

Unfortunately, my dad decided to send M a "happy father's day" text and mention reconciling, which was very unwanted. It pissed off both of us, but thankfully it didn't ruin the rest of the day. I have him blocked on all my socials and my phone, so that's probably why he's now attempting to get to us through M. Just stop, man.

M went out that evening to treat Chance to dinner since it was his birthday. Baby and I ate noodles for dinner. Since she'd gotten up so late, she didn't nap all day, and after a bath at 7, she was ready for bed, which meant I had the evening to myself, too! Quite a luxury these days! I laid in bed and ate chocolates while watching TV, and was nearly asleep when M came home. We chatted for a bit, then both retired for the night.

In all, not a bad weekend. The only thing that threw it off was the baby getting a hold of the kitchen shear somehow (how?!) and cutting up the onesie she was wearing. She managed not to nick herself at all, just destroy her clothes, but it freaked M out, so we're going to do a deep clean of the house this evening and wrangle any potential baby hazards.

Short work day today. M has a job interview this afternoon, which I have to be home to watch the baby for, and I have a doctor's appointment directly afterward. The captain gave me the go-ahead to just leave work and not use benefit time for doctor's appointments from now on, which I was hoping for, so now I can accrue as much PTO as possible to cover my "maternity leave", which is really only FML.

Short week, as well, and I am so ready for the long weekend.

I decided against shortening the straps, so the bathing suit is done. I knit about half the belt, but then decided I was happy without it. So done! Although maybe I'll change my mind for Costume College!

I dropped my first stitch when working with size 6/0 needles. It wasn't fun picking it back up. Fortunately it had only run a few rows, but I'm not quite sure I got it quite right. I couldn't tell looking at the pattern so no else will be able to tell either. I was so glad I had a crochet hook small enough to pick it up with.

Oops!

The shoes are done and I'm very happy!

I decided to try wax resist on a scarf. It was clear it wasn't going to work, so I washed the wax out. Only it didn't wash all the way out. And the color was wrong anyway. A polka dot skinny scarf will be here from Amazon Sunday.

Two failed attempts, I threw the wax away 😂

Had a weird, jagged, pulsating thing in my vision suddenly appear yesterday. I haven't had something like that before, and it seems it was probably a scintillating scotoma. It was a very strange thing, just this little vibrating, zigzaggy blob that sort of blurred my vision in one eye and floated around like a flag in a soft breeze. Seems like it was most likely an ocular migraine, though I didn't have any real headache with it. Blob lasted about 15 minutes, and then was gone, and a headache never materialized. ~shrug~

Spent most of the evening after work in the kitchen. I had a burst of cooking energy, so I made the southern fried pork chops with bacon gravy, seasoned green beans with more bacon, and white cheddar mac & cheese. By the end of it I was exhausted and sweaty, but we ate damned well, I tell you what.

Baby fought her bedtime last night. She would just scream and scream, and then when I went in to calm her down she'd be just fine and just want to play. -_- Girl, it is after 9 o'clock and past my bedtime, go to sleep!

She was up again at midnight with a bad dream. She sobbed inconsolably, especially whenever we tried going back to her bed, so we sat in the living room until she calmed herself down. She eventually crawled off my lap and sat beside me on the couch petting Tibby for a good while and just saying "good" over and over, and then she seemed to feel much better. I let her lead the way back to her room, and then she went right back to sleep, completely exhausted.

It took two hours to get her back to sleep, so I lost a good chunk of my night, and I'm feeling it this morning. I did nothing beyond making her breakfast, then I sat back in bed and scrolled through The Horrors on FB before giving up on that and getting ready for work. Really hope I can sleep in tomorrow.

M has a job interview on Monday, and I have a doctor's appointment, so it will be a half-day at work for me. Then it's Juneteenth on Thursday, and I'm taking Friday off to bridge the gap to the weekend, and the following Monday is a day full of more doctor's appointments (we're doing all the genetic testing on the fetus right now to make sure it's healthy), so a short week and a five-day weekend are ahead. I am ready to be off work for a while again. Hoping to poke at some 1830s stuff while I'm off, but it's not a solid goal or anything.

Flamestitch/Bargello/Irish Stitch

Now that the Christmas ornaments are finished, I started one of those 18th century pocketbooks. It's one that's patterned in Fitting and Proper. The museum page is here: https://mycchc.catalogaccess.com/objects/29491. It's using the leftover wools from my embroidered 1805 dress from a couple of years ago with the addition of blues, browns, and black. I just bought the small skeins this time. It's done on petit point canvas, though it gives me a slightly larger gauge than the original (22ct for me, 25ct for the original). I had to double the 2-ply crewel wools to get good coverage so if I wanted to do more flamestitch/Bargello/Irish stitch in the future, I would probably plan for 4-ply wools. On the other hand, the leftovers may be more useful as 2-ply so maybe not.

I've mostly been working on the 1897 evening dress, but in between times I've made some nice progress.
18th Century Pocketbook progress - 6/12/25

The whole thing is eleven rows of four motifs. It's physically harder to do than cross-stitch because the wools are thicker than the cotton embroidery threads, but it's mentally easier because it's a single repeated motif with the same fill pattern in different colors.

Almost!

I felt like making the shoes today, so I did. They're done except for the grommets because my downstairs neighbors might not appreciate it this late. I did set two though, just to get an idea of what the laces will look like.

I'm glad I made them! They went together smoothly and it was a nice distraction

Was breathtakingly tired yesterday thanks to the baby's overnight shenanigans, so dinner was low effort. Not on purpose - I had planned pork chops in bacon gravy with a noodle side - but when I pulled the pork out of the freezer I discovered that it was a 2lb roast and I hadn't cut it into chops. I set it in hot water to defrost, but I was ravenous and an hour later it was still frozen solid, so I pivoted and made a couple of batches of frozen dumplings for dinner instead. Pork chops will happen tonight, instead.

M went by the post office after I got home to see if we had any mail, and it turns out that they are no longer holding mail for our complex, they are just returning everything to sender. -_- Which is super, thanks for letting us know about that. So I guess no ordering anything online until we figure out our mail situation.

The new complex owners may as well be ghosts. The phone number on the new website changes every few days, and no one answers any of them anyway. There's no resident portal set up yet, and their "contact us" form doesn't have any section for an actual message, it just asks for your name and email address. -_- My hopes of having any repairs done are pretty much zero.

The rest of the evening was very quiet. M and I hung out on the couch watching TV, and the baby always loves when we are all together like that, so she was happy crawling all over the two of us. Many enthusiastic high-fives were given. Then the cats joined us, so we were just a pile of beings on the couch until bedtime.

Baby went to bed with minimal fuss, and I crawled into bed as soon as I was sure she was settled. Had a fitful night, though, despite being completely zonked, and had a terrible time staying asleep. ~sigh~

Half a sink of dishes and the baby's breakfast was all I managed before work, but eh, it's something.

I'm not sure I'm going to finish them, but I sewed the soles for bathing shoes tonight. I pinned the mockup I made last year on top of them, and they turned out surprisingly close to good. If I feel like it, I'll make another mockup tomorrow.

This morning my mom's seven month old phone was totally dead. Not battery wise, but just dead. It had randomly turned off a few times in the last few days. It was a 2023 Motorola Razr--the foldable one. So this morning was spent setting up her new Pixel 9a. I have the Pixel 9 pro XL, so it's familiar to me.

This afternoon one plug on my power strip lost power. That was weird. And I guess I'm getting muscle memory for my new automatic, because when I was setting up Bluetooth in my mom's car, it wouldn't start because I forgot to clutch. I still really miss shifting, so it's probably a good thing I'm at least adjusting.

I also went to the boardgame cafe with a teacher friend. So it was a very full day!

Fairly low-key night at home. The baby was slightly nutso when I first came home from work, but some cuddle time seemed to even her out. I made her some mini sausages for dinner, which she devoured, and then she happily played by herself while I cooked dinner.

Which was fast and easy, thankfully. Made a garlic lemon cream sauce and simmered the leftover chicken breasts in it for a few minutes for them to warm up, heated up leftover potatoes, and voila, a satisfactory dinner.

Tried to get to sleep early so I could get up and do petticoat stuff, but the baby didn't really go down until around 9:30, so I didn't get to bed until after ten, and then she was up multiple times during the night, so I did not get up early at all. I had a terrible time getting back to sleep, so I set my alarm for as late as I could push it. Blobbed out of bed around 7, had just enough time to get ready and make the baby's breakfast plate, and then was off to work.

No idea what to cook for dinner. The plan had been the last of the sausages, but when I went home for lunch, M said that he'd thrown them out because they had gone bad. -_- Guess I'm winging it tonight.

Done!

Unless I decide to finish the belt or to shorten the straps, the bathing suit is done! I just have to block it and weave in the ends by the straps if I decide not to shorten them.

I never want to duplicate stitch another polka dot...

Finally!

Even though I traced a pair of shoes that are pretty close-fitting, they still seem quite big. Oh, well. They'll do. The pattern was published in 1901. Here's the Ravelry page: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/MCBurbage/ladies-bedroom-slippers
