I've been painting all the things.

bethzyllaThe kitchen-facelift-project-that-never-ends just keeps on rolling. The walls are fully painted now and I've moved on to the cabinets. I decided I wanted to dip my toe in the water before I jumped, so I started with a base cabinet that has three drawers and is separated from the other cabinets by the dishwasher. I did it the 'right' way - I removed the awful wooden handle pulls, sanded the drawer faces smooth with a belt sander (which removed at least two layers of paint in the process), laid down two coats of primer, lightly sanded again, then laid down two coats of paint with a foam roller. I have some seriously white drawers now!
On the right, you can see a pretty good representation of what I'm tackling. I pried off one wood pull (yes, it was nailed on) and it exposed some of the lovely green paint of yesteryear. I'm guessing 1970's? At least it matched the carpet that used to be in there.

So I've learned that this process is much more time consuming than I thought it would be. Drawers are probably especially bad since everything has to be emptied out, which isn't necessarily the case with cabinets. Luckily I've only got one more drawer, but it's a doozy (flatware drawer) and I'll need to wash the divider tray, lay new shelf paper in the bottom, and wash the gripper liner. After that it's all cabinets! Today's goal is to finish off the rest of the base cabinets and work on the wall cabinets the rest of the week.
Ben and I have also tackled our outdated bathroom. As usual, we didn't get any official 'before' shots of this. What I do have is a slightly embarrassing selfie I took in '09 when I was dressed as 'Construction Spice' for Halloween. Behold!
The walls are some kind of plastic(?) paneling. It's white-ish with gold flecks. Truly awful.

We primed and painted the door, walls, trim, vanity, linen cabinet, and medicine cabinet frame. We also bought a new white vanity top to replace the yellow-and-gold monstrosity it had before. Just making that one change really gave the bathroom a much cleaner feel, but painting everything pulled it all together. I have some touching-up to do on the medicine cabinet where the painter's tape didn't release from the paint very well, plus a few spot on the walls. We'll also be putting in new flooring since that's the last yellow thing in there. That bathroom is the size of a postage stamp so it shouldn't take longer than an afternoon.
I never ceases to amaze me what a difference a fresh coat of paint makes!
